PhD Research Studentships
Details of PhD studentships, covering tutition fees and maintenance (living costs) for home and EU students (subject to Department for Employment and Learning UK residency rules), can be found here.
The value of studentships for 2010/11 entry are yet to be decided but for 2009/10, a studentship is valued at £3,390 for fees and £13,290 (tax free) for maintenance.
The awards will be made to applicants proposing doctoral research on subjects that fit with the School's expertise in

  • Contemporary Social Issues and Policy
  • Family Policy and Child Welfare
  • Identities, Lifestyle and CultureSocial Divisions and Conflict.

Other studentships to support Taught Masters may be offered, and details will be made available on the School's website.

International PhD Research Studentships
The School is offering two International PhD studentships (covering full international fees and living costs) which are available to non-EU applicants, for October 2010 entry. The studentships are linked to two major ESRC projects:

  1. Conflict in Cities and the Contested State, and
  2. Poverty and Social Exclusion in the UK.
